The star apple averages about 3” in diameter and is round in shape. The skin is typically purple in color with hints of green. Because the skin has a high amount of latex, the skin and rind are inedible. When cut in half, the interior of the fruit has a star shape, hence the name star apple.
 
The fruit is picked before it is ripe and will ripen at home at room temperature. Best eaten when chilled, the white flesh surrounding the seeds is typically scooped out with a spoon.
